Cartoon animation has taken a back seat to the flashy, fortune-building visuals of 3D and computer animation - but it’s not dead. Several key forums still support cartoon animation and let cartoon animators practice their craft.

Forgetting the Cartoons

When we say “animation,” we instantly think of 3D, computer, film, and video game animation. Many of us have forgotten that cartoon animation is still around.

Newsweek hasn’t. In a December 2006 issue, the news magazine ran an article about the changing nature of political cartoons. Apparently, the art of political cartoons and political cartoon animation is growing, though taking a different form. The most popular versions of political cartoons appear in newspapers and magazines, but many cartoonists now opt to post political cartoons online. They sometime use Flash and other applications to create animated political cartoons.

Cartoon Animation Jobs

While 2D and cartoon animation is now “old-fashioned,” its popularity has not died completely. Cartoon animation remains alive and well in children’s entertainment. Afternoon and Saturday morning television is probably the largest cartoon animation forum of all. Additionally, there are hundreds of cartoon features produced and distributed by minor animation studios. Many times one cartoon animation job leads to another. A comic strip may launch an animated TV cartoon, and a cartoon TV series may spawn a feature film. In the process, animation careers are made.

There are hidden jobs in cartoon animation - you just have to remember where they are.
