Aspiring filmmakers and animators have a tough road ahead of them. If they can’t network with the right people, their second bet is to gain recognition through film or animation festivals.

Film and Animation Jobs Hard to Come By

If you recently earned your animation degree or a degree in film from a reputable school, you may be starting to see how tough it is to get a foothold in the entertainment industry. Creative fields like animation and filmmaking generally attract a lot of people because the job can be very enjoyable. There are only so many assistant positions available for those who want to make connections and learn from experienced filmmakers. The rest of the pack often don’t have any entrees into the field and end up taking jobs in another industry to make ends meet. This career path sounds a bit bleak, but there is another way. If you’ve already received a computer animation degree or some other degree in filmmaking, then you’ve probably already learned how to create a cartoon or short film. Why not keep making them and submit them to film festivals around the country? Film and animation festivals are in place to discover new films and talent. If a film or animation festival accepts your work for viewing, it is possible that someone who can help you will like your work.

First Things First—Earn a Film or Animation Degree

Before you can hope to start meeting the people that can help further your career, you’ll need to develop skills in filmmaking or animation. The best way to do that these days is to go to school. There are a number of great film and animation schools out there that will give you a good foundation in your art form. The experience you get in school will help you take the next steps you need to advance your career.
