The Secret to Effective HTML Page Title Tags
The lowly HTML Title tag - it is too often neglected. If it weren't for the fact that it is a required element of XHTML pages, it might be left out all together. A quick search in Google yield 18.2 million pages entitled "Untitled Document" (which happens to be the default filler in Dreamweaver.) Enlightened content producers and etailers, on the other hand, have harnessed the power of the title tag. They know that search engines will give their higher prominence in search results whe the title tag contains relevant and revealing keywords about the page's contents. They also know

It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere - a Fireworks CS5 Vector Project
I'm really enjoying the new Compound Shape tool in Fireworks CS5, and I've got a quick tutorial here to help you get more comfortable with using it. Aside from my Hawaiian shirts, I'm known to enjoy the odd martini here and there. Recently I was staring at a (sadly) empty martini glass, and thought hey, the shape of this glass in profile is pretty simple. I bet I could slap together a martini icon pretty quickly in Fireworks. And so I did. Follow along in this tutorial as we quickly put together a symbol of a delectable beverage, using the

Native hashchange event - Good bye polling
I just discovered that there is a native HashChange event in the latest version of several browsers (FF, Webkit, IE) - this way navigation solutions working with the hash at the end of a URL work without nasty timers. To add the event, simply use: if ( window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'hashchange', function () { checkHashChange(location.hash) }, false ); } else if ( window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onhashchange' , function () { checkHashChange(location.hash) } ); }Take a look at these samples as well. In real world applications you still will need to use a combination of both methods (polling + events).Concerning

I posted a while ago that I was working on the next-generation Flash/Flex compiler at Adobe. After taking some time off, traveled a lot and moving half-way across the globe from San Francisco, I've started working again.  And then I remembered I had a blog! Perhaps the most exciting piece to report is that Code Model: [...]

Syntax highlighting for Sass in Dreamweaver
I've just started using Sass to code CSS. I really like it because it has greatly boosted my ego as a programmer, "I can put programming logic inside my CSS!" Where Do You Need the Most Help in Flash?
I'm working on building some new Flash content hubs and fleshing out the lessons available, but before I do that I'd like to know what you want to see. What are you hoping to get out of Flash lessons? With a program that has so many diverse applications, sometimes it's hard to choose just one focus - so tell me where your interests lie. What do you want most to learn about Flash?

Reader Question: Flash Scenes or Flash Keyframes?
Joel asks:
I'm creating a menu that goes to different pages on a Flash website and I don't know if I should put my pages on keyframes or scenes. Which one is better?
That's actually a bit of a trick question, because it depends on the complexity of your website and how much interactivity is involved on each page. If you have a simple site, there's no need to complicate things beyond keyframes. But if it's not so simple, well...Reader Question: Flash Scenes or Flash Keyframes? originally appeared on About.com Animation on Friday, August 27th, 2010 at 04:10:17. Flash Tip: Onion-Skinning Animation
If you're used to working on a light table, it can be a little disconcerting to move into the digital realm and adapt your workflows to suit. You're used to having layered sheets of paper, to being able to flip through them quickly, to being able to just flick a single switch to turn the light table on and see all your work stacked together in translucent overlay so you can see how each frame fits together. Well...guess what? You can do that in Flash too, although it's slightly different. The feature is called onion-skinning, and it lets you see as many frames before and after your current frame as you'd like.Flash Tip: Onion-Skinning Animation originally appeared on About.com Animation on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 04:17:48. Reader Question: What's the difference between motion, shape, and classic tweens?
Ashley writes:
I've been using Flash for a while, but I just upgraded from CS3 to CS5. I'm used to motion tweens and shape tweens, but what's a classic tween? What's the difference between all of them? Motion tweens don't work the way I'm used to anymore, so I'm a little confused.
Well, for starters, classic tweens were introduced in Flash CS4 - right about when motion tweens changed. Shape tweens aren't all that different, but a few things have changed in the way we understand tweening.Reader Question: What's the difference between motion, shape, and classic tweens? originally appeared on About.com Animation on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 at 02:35:14. Free Resources
Just a reminder: we keep ongoing lists of free resources, from sound effects to software. The royalty-free music listing gives a list of various sources for music, sound effects, and vocals from multiple artists, with various license options (some requiring credit, others free for use and alteration). The free software page lists software for both 2D and 3D animation - some free trials, some completely free, many with links to About.com reviews detailing their pros and cons. Motorola Droid 2 with Flash 10.1
With all the fuss about Flash Player on mobile devices, many have eagerly awaited the launch of the Motorola Droid 2, whose Google Android 2.2 OS comes with full Flash integration using Flash Player 10.1 and hardware acceleration. Well, it's here - and Adobe is happily showing off with video on their blog. I watched the video and I'm pretty impressed with the player's handling of different types of content, with a comfortable feel of natural web browsing adapted for the needs of a touch-screen mobile device. I've been thinking of replacing my clunky G1 phone with a Droid 2, and this is definitely tipping me further in that direction. What are your opinions?Motorola Droid 2 with Flash 10.1 originally appeared on About.com Animation on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 at 02:37:14. Permalink | Comment | Email this
Flash Speed Upgrade - For Mac
PC users, turn your eyes aside - this one's for the Mac crowd only. If you're running the Flash Player on Mac OS 10.6.3 or higher, the newest version of the player includes hardware-accelerated Flash video (H.264 content). The speed increase should be noticeable in playback and in CPU usage, with lower usage and fewer playback errors. You can download the upgrade here...but only if you have the properly compatible NVidia graphics card. Yeah. I know. I know what you're thinking. More Flash Security Vulnerabilities
Warning comes straight from the horse's mouth as Adobe releases a statement about the danger of "clickjacking" inherent in versions 10.1.53.64 and earlier of the Flash Player. At least six critical security vulnerabilities can leave your browser open to exploitation by malicious scripts. These issues also affect Adobe AIR 2.0.2.12610 and earlier. It's strongly recommended that you check your versions of Player and AIR to be sure you have the latest versions - and if not, upgrade to Flash Player 10.1.82.76 and Air 2.0.3. At least there's one little bit of good news: Adobe's finally coming out with a patch for the vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader.More Flash Security Vulnerabilities originally appeared on About.com Animation on Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 at 02:20:20. Flash Tip: Expanding/Collapsing Panels
Every inch of Flash CS5 is packed with those little things you don't always notice - whether it's those easy shortcuts or a collapsible menu that opens up an entirely new set of tools, panels, options, etc. One such little thing is the extra right-hand menu panel that opens, folding out from the small toolbar of buttons next to the main right-hand dock of panels / toolsets.Flash Tip: Expanding/Collapsing Panels originally appeared on About.com Animation on Sunday, August 8th, 2010 at 04:34:52.
